About

Jane South

Born in Manchester, UK, Jane South began her artistic journey in experimental theater before moving to the United States in 1989. Her multidisciplinary practice has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions, including Halfway Off (2023), Switch Back (2020), and Raked (2014) at Spencer Brownstone Gallery, New York; Floor/Ceiling (2013) at The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Connecticut; and Box (2010) at the Knoxville Museum of Art, Tennessee.

South’s work has been featured in group exhibitions at the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Museum of Arts and Design, the Whitney Museum of American Art at Altria, The Drawing Center, and the Baltimore Museum of Art. Her work has received critical attention in The New York Times, Artforum, Art in America, Frieze, ARTnews, and The New Yorker.

Her honors include a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Grant, Pollock-Krasner Foundation grants, and a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship. She was elected to the National Academy of Design in 2018 and is Chair of Fine Arts at Pratt Institute. South is represented by Spencer Brownstone Gallery, New York.
